Bite-sized, mobile-first learning.

There are many benefits to using mobile tech for workplace and educational learning environments. Mobile-first platforms make learning more attainable and achievable than ever. Learners can get easy updates to new materials provided in an app, the learning is accessible anytime at any location, smaller bite-sized lessons reduce cognitive overload and can increase learner retention. As designers, we can get quick feedback as learners go through mobile-first content and ultimately save organizations quite a lot of time and money vs. offering offline longer-form courses.

In light of all of this, there are still challenges for learning designers to consider when designing for mobile-first learning. For example, there may be limited storage on devices and challenges around connectivity in more rural environments. Ethically, we need to consider equitable access, accessibility, and any possible cyber bullying or addition to gamified content. To me however, the benefits to learners far outweigh the current limitations and challenges.

We’ve started to play with quick trainings at Desklight using 7Taps as a tool. When you are looking to quickly increase communication between groups, deliver training to teams, or build collaboration among team members, mobile learning is a wonderful option! Let me know if you give it a try or want to brainstorm ideas together!
